About us

A school where a child feels safe

CLLC Turkey is a private nursery and K-8 school in Beykoz, Istanbul. It teaches the Turkish national curriculum in full, and adds to it more than twenty years of Canadian experience in teaching English.

What a school says about itself matters less than the kind of day a child has inside it. Below we set out what guided us when we built this school, and what that means for your child.

01

The Turkish curriculum is taught in full, and English lives inside the day

CLLC Turkey is a Turkish school. The entire Ministry of National Education curriculum is taught, with nothing skipped. Your child learns Turkish, and their own culture, in depth.

English is not an extra weight placed on top of that. Because our team speaks both Turkish and English, the language is as present at break time, in play and in ordinary conversation as it is in the lesson. A child learns it by using it rather than by memorizing it.

The two languages do not replace one another; they feed one another.
02

We decided, deliberately, that learning should be enjoyable

We know how common school-related stress is among children. So we built the program not only around academic results but around how a child feels while learning.

Lessons are supported by themes and activities, and children look forward to arriving in the morning. That pays off twice over: results improve, and the pressure on the child comes down.

  • Subjects are taught through activities and themes
  • Classes are small, so a teacher can follow every child
  • A topic that was not understood is not left behind
03

Our door is open to every family

Turkish families and families who have made Turkey their new home are here side by side. Whatever a child’s background or level of language, they are not left on their own on their first day in the classroom.

We know that finding the right school is not easy, particularly for families who want their child to progress in both Turkish and English. Because our team works in both languages, there is no barrier between a parent and the school either.

04

The building was planned around a child’s day

Classrooms, play areas and quiet corners were designed so that a child is comfortable all day, not so that a visitor is impressed. Where children sit, where they rest and how they move at break time were discussed before the plans were drawn.

There are separate spaces for each age group, from nursery through to Grade 8. A younger child is not carried along at an older child’s pace, and an older child is not squeezed into a younger one’s routine.

05

A child’s wellbeing comes before academic achievement

Social and emotional learning is not a separate lesson but a natural part of the day. Children learn to pause before reacting, to say what they feel without being afraid, and to settle disagreements with respect.

When we choose teachers, academic qualification is where we start; after that we look at how they speak to a child and at their patience. Your child will spend most of their day with these people.

The best thing is to come and see

There is only so much that writing about a school can convey. Get in touch to walk the campus, see the classrooms and ask your questions face to face.
